Designer Duo QAL
Last October while I was walking the aisles at Quilt Market, I stopped to say hello to my friend Karen. She introduced me to the lady she was chatting with, and wouldn’t you know it, that person was Nancy Rink! I’ve been a bit of a Nancy Rink fan girl ever since I saw her Amish with a Twist 2 quilt. She has such a great eye for color and a magical way of creating designs that look fantastic as traditional or modern quilts.
When Nancy asked if I’d be interested in being a guest designer for her next Designer Duo quilt-along that she and Sarah Maxwell put together, I said “Absolutely - but can I make it entirely from my stash?” So - that’s important to note. I can’t even begin to tell you fabric requirements for my version, because I just played with it as I went along, happily pulling fabric from my stash.
To get the visuals just right, I used EQ8 to digitally recolor the quilt. Then, I used that color map as a template for how I wanted to place my colors. You’ll notice was I started making the quilt I made some shifts in color placement here or there, and changed my mind about a rainbow border. Feel free to use my color map for your quilt, if that’s the feel you’re looking for!
I really liked that with this design you can choose to only work in the pattern book, OR you can add any 12” blocks you choose. The quilt uses three block sizes, 6”, 12” and 18” - so it’s easy to substitute in any block you want. I decided to make a few blocks to add to the pattern, and I’ll be sharing the templates for them here on the blog. The finished quilt ends up at 78″ x 90″ - perfect for cuddling and keeping cozy.
Every Friday I’ll be sharing close ups of the blocks, so I hope you’ll stop by and join me or this fun adventure! Plus, don’t miss the other designers on this block, including: Karen of Lady K Quilts, Giuseppe Ribaudo, aka Giucy Giuce, Tiffany Hayes of Needle in a Hayes Stack, and Dolores Smith of Timeworn Toolbox. There’s something for everyone here, we all made this quilt but with our own flair.
